Refiners time their maintenance and run rates to stock gasoline ahead of Memorial Day-to-Labor Day driving demand; the seasonal build's size versus the five-year band is the standard read on whether the market enters the driving season well supplied. The seasonal low around late September historically marks the switch back into the rebuild.
The Weekly Petroleum Status Report uses a five-year average and range. The Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report does the same for gas. This page uses the same idea with a strict same-week rule. This page is total motor gasoline (WGTSTUS1). Finished barrels plus blending components. The ~200+ million barrel stockpile the Weekly Petroleum Status Report headlines and traders mean by “gasoline inventories. ” Finished-only stocks (WGFSTUS1) are a much smaller residual after most inventory moved into blendstocks; they sit near the teens of million barrels and are not the WPSR headline series. The U.S. gasoline demand page is a different cousin again: product supplied (flow), not tanks (stock).
